Beginner machine sewing
Ages 6 & Up
Supply fee $90

Description:
Exciting hands-on beginner-level sewing course designed specifically for beginners who want to explore the world of sewing. Students will learn the fundamentals of machine sewing during interactive lessons. Through practical and creative activities, they will develop essential skills and gain confidence in using a sewing machine.

- Introduce children to the basic principles of sewing and the safe operation of a sewing machine.
- Foster creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor skills through hands-on sewing
- Introduction to Sewing Machines
- Parts of a sewing machine
- Machine safety rules and precautions
- Threading the machine and winding a bobbin
- Sewing Tools and Materials
- Overview of essential sewing tools (scissors, pins, measuring tape, etc.)
- Understanding different types of fabrics and threads
- Hand Sewing used in Finishing Projects such as Whip Stitch
- Practicing hand stitches on fabric scraps
- Getting Started with Machine Sewing
- Threading the sewing machine
- Selecting stitches and adjusting stitch length
- Using the foot pedal and controlling sewing speed
- Stitch Practice
- Guided exercises to practice sewing straight lines and gentle curves
- Creating simple geometric shapes using straight stitches
- Finishing Techniques
- Hemming and finishing raw edges
- Securing stitches and removing excess threads
- Ironing and pressing completed project
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills Identify and fix common mistakes
- Possible Sewing Project Examples Creating a simple drawstring bag Sewing a basic pillow or stuffed toy Customizing a fabric bookmark or keychain

***Must know sewing terminology, machine parts and have completed a beginner-level sewing course or have some basic sewing experience
In this child sewing course, young participants with some prior sewing experience will further develop their skills and creativity. They will explore a range of projects and techniques to enhance their sewing abilities. The course will be conducted in a fun and interactive manner, ensuring a rewarding learning experience for every child.
Course Objectives:
Build upon foundational sewing skills and knowledge gained in previous courses
Expand the understanding of different sewing techniques and their applications
Encourage creativity and self-expression through sewing projects
Develop problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Foster a sense of accomplishment and pride in completed projects
Course Highlights:
1. Intermediate sewing techniques-Participants will learn advanced applications of new decorative stitches to create alternative seams in addition to applying buttons, snaps and zippers to projects.
2. Reading and understanding patterns: Children will learn how to read and interpret sewing patterns, including symbols, markings, and cutting layouts.
3. Embellishments and decorative techniques: Children will have the opportunity to enhance their sewing projects with decorative elements such as appliqué and embroidery.
4. Introduction to quilting: Participants will learn the basics of quilting, including piecing fabrics, sewing blocks together, and creating beautiful quilted designs.
5. Introduction to garment construction: Learn stitches and fabrics appropriate for a variety of wearable items.
6. Repairs and alterations: Children will acquire skills to mend and alter garments, including hemming, replacing buttons, and making minor adjustments.
7. Refashion & Reuse: Students will use their creativity and repurpose items into practical and stylish new sewing projects.

As your child learns to sew you will see confidence and creativity develop and a sense of accomplishment when they learn to face challenges with a new attitude toward problem-solving.
As a teacher I want every one of my students to enjoy the process of creating projects that demonstrate what they are learning weekly.
I hope they have joy in the journey of creating our projects on the sewing machine.
